The history of the Dragee dates back to the early times of ancient Rome. Emperors decreed that honey covered almonds be offered to celebrate imperial births and weddings.
This tradition continued through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, especially among European aristocrats who were fond of sharing these memorable delicacies symbolizing wealth and royalty. The Lady and the Unicorn series of tapestries are commonly interpreted as depicting the five senses. Here on the 'Taste" tapestry, the Lady is taking dragees from a dish.
The introduction of sugar, and later chocolate, in Europe refined the Dragee into an extraordinarily sensuous delight for all to enjoy today.
Ascending over time from favors for weddings and birth celebrations, Dragees have always been associated with fortunate events in the life of Emperors and Royalty: Coronations, Birthdays, Weddings, Anniversaries, Valentine’s Day and presented as gifts for noble guests. This time honored tradition has been embraced by people the world over as a way to distinguish life’s special moments. |
